Underground Ancona
Applications for guided visits are starting again with the new routes.
It is known that underground waterworks for supplying the city's needs existed under Ancona from the beginning of the fifteenth century onwards (and were probably built in earlier periods than that).
In the first half of the nineteenth century, projects were launched for expanding and improving the distribution service, and part of the ancient aqueduct of Santa Margherita was restored after its destruction in the hostilities of 1799. It was probably connected to the catchment tunnels which have been found in the slopes of Monte Conero.
Recent speleological expeditions and historical research have allowed us to discover and survey the actual dimensions of this important waterwork.
