Green Ancona
Nature in and around the city
The Monte Conero Regional Park, set up in 1987, is a green oasis centred on Monte Conero (572 metres): 6,000 hectares of Mediterranean maquis plunging to the sea. It is a protected area where you can walk the 18 paths which wind their way through the woods, on your own or accompanied by expert guides (Forestalp, Natura or Turismo).
You can watch the passage of migratory birds such as the peregrine falcons and nocturnal birds of prey, or visit historical and artistic treasures such as the Guard Tower and the Romanesque chapel of Santa Maria in Portonovo bay.
Cardeto Park occupies an area of 35 hectares stretching from Cappuccini hill to Cardeto hill and including the valley which separates the two high points. Human presence in the area goes back to prehistoric times, in fact there have been many finds of material from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The discovery of tombs built by the Piceni has demonstrated that this area was the site of the city's first settlement. Subsequently, the roles played in the city's history by the two hills diverged.
Cappuccini found itself within the city walls, whereas Cardeto came within the city boundary only after the enlargement that was decided on in 1861.
